Stuart Little is a 1945 American children's novel by E. B. White. It was White’s first children’s book, and it would become a classic in children’s literature along with his other works, Charlotte’s Web and The Trumpet of the Swan. This film adaptation titled Stuart Little was released in 1999, and combines a live-action cast with a CGI mouse. The film stars Geena Davis, Hugh Laurie, Jonathan Lipnicki, Nathan Lane, and Michael J. Fox. It was a major box office success and spawned two sequels.

Stuart arrives at his new home.

In Manhattan, Frederick (Laurie) and Eleanor (Davis) Little visit an orphanage to adopt a new brother for their son, George (Lipnicki). Instead, they meet and then adopt an anthropomorphic mouse named Stuart (Fox). Stuart is kind, empathetic, and wears red high top chucks as he explains to the Littles how he’s been at the orphanage the longest. They bring him home, hoping he’ll be a great brother for George. George, meanwhile, being a sensible child, refuses to accept Stuart as his brother because he is a mouse. Meanwhile, the family cat, Snowbell (Lane), is disgusted to be a new pet to a mouse. Stuart’s life in the house goes off to a bad start when, on his second day, he falls ill after being trapped in the washing machine. He soon recovers, but it does him no favors in endearing himself to George.

Snack time!

The Littles soon invite their extended family to meet Stuart. It goes about as well as you’d expect, but the worst part is when George confesses he does not regard Stuart as a brother but simply as a mouse. Stuart then asks Eleanor and Frederick to get some information from the orphanage about his biological parents, as he feels an empty space inside him. This is heartbreaking for the Littles, as they really care for Stuart and wish he felt at home with them. However, because they love him, they promise him they will. The question now is, will George accept Stuart so that this new family can stay together?

Stuart makes an impression in his chucks.

This film was played a lot in elementary schools because it was based on a book, and because of that, it holds a special place in the hearts of those who got to watch it on a wheeled-in CRT TV in the early 2000s. That nostalgia isn’t necessarily wrong, though, as this is a perfectly fine kids’ film. Michael J. Fox is great as Stuart, as his voice is the perfect blend of friendly and earnest. Jonathan Lipnicki was the man in the early 2000s, and he’s great in this movie as George. The CGI model of Stuart has aged the best, but it was pretty good for the time, and it’s never so bad that it takes you out of the movie. Overall, this is a fine, fun children’s film that will offer up tons of nostalgia for many!

Best Chucks Scene

Stuart wears his red chucks as he sails this boat.

As a kid, Stuart Little was insanely cool. He wore cool outfits, had a sweet red car, and got to use all kinds of toys. The best chucks scene in the film displays all these aspects of the character. It is, of course, the boat race scene. George has been preparing for the boat race scene for most of the film, and he wants to win because he believes it’ll keep the other kids from bullying him. On the day of the race, Stuart is wearing a sailor’s outfit with his red chucks, matching George. He is charged with carrying George's remote control, but he accidentally drops it, and it gets stepped on by a passerby, rendering the boat useless. While George sulks and is comforted by his parents, Stuart takes charge by jumping into the boat and sailing it manually. The race that follows is action-packed as George’s bully tries to wreck the boat. Stuart is able to maneuver and win the race, finally enabling George to accept Stuart as his brother. The scene acts as a turning point in the film, cementing Stuart as a part of the family while also offering some cool shots of Stuart in his chucks sailing.

George and Stuart's matching chucks show that they’re meant to be brothers.
