“Birds of a Feather (Live)” by Bastille

Bastille is an English pop band from London that initially began as a solo project by lead vocalist Dan Smith. Membership later expanded to include keyboardist Kyle Simmons, bassist/guitarist Will Farquarson, and drummer Chris “Woody” Wood. The group immediately struck it big with the release of their first studio album, Bad Blood, in 2013. This album spawned the massive hit “Pompeii”, which peaked at #2 in the UK and #5 in the US. Taking its name from the infamous Roman town of the same name, the song was released on January 11th, 2013. After this mega-hit launched them to stardom, the band has been steadily releasing music over the past decade and often do big performances that bring their signature sound to all genres.

Song covers are a particularly hard nut to crack in the music world. Performing someone else’s work opens you up to criticism from all over. If it is too different or too similar, it doesn’t matter because someone will have an opinion on the matter. This is especially the case when you cover an artist like Billie Eilish. Her style is so unique to her that there really isn’t anyone else who can match it. Her latest hit “Birds of a Feather”, paired her incredible vocals with a breezy synth-wave beat. This wouldn’t be the first song you would associate with Bastille but that is what makes their cover so interesting.

Chucks of a feather, we should stick together.

This video is from an extended set the band performed on the Alt Nation radio station for SiriusXM. The performance of “Birds of a Feather” kicked off the set and right away we see that this is a different vibe from the band’s traditionally epic soundscape style. Instead of a setup that would create a big booming sound, we see an intimate setup in a small studio with only two guitars, a bass, and a keyboard. We also see that two members of the band are wearing high top chucks which fits with the laid-back vibe they are all going for. The performance itself is pretty straightforward, but the harmonic interaction between the band members is the thing to take away from here. Bastille has always had great layered vocals dating all the way back to “Pompeii”, but here they mimic the softness in Billie’s vocals and the production layering Finneas did by perfectly harmonizing together. It’s just a really solid performance that shows what competent musicians the band is and how they always make a cover like this look easy.
