John Cena, the “Doctor of Thuganomics”, “Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, Respect”, “the Never Seen Seventeen”, “The Last Real Champion”, and the “Greatest of All-Time”, has a legacy unlike any other in the sport of professional wrestling. Debuting as a nobody in the WWE in 2002, he floundered as a generic babyface to the point that he was set to get released by the company after less than six months. This was until he debuted his “Doctor of Thuganomics” character and started freestyle-rapping his promos. After that, the rest was history. During these early years, WWE had Cena release a full studio album of original hip-hop songs, You Can’t See Me. The track “Bad, Bad Man” is the second single from Cena’s one and only album. The track features Cena’s cousin Tha Trademarc and rapper Bumpy Knuckles, and has become a cult classic. Surprisingly, this album debuted at #15 on the Billboard 200 and has been beloved by fans for over twenty years.

The song is a bragadocious record about how much of a bad dude Cena is. It’s honestly a throwback to battle rap records because it is all brags and put-downs. Some may view this as basic and call this track filler, but it is filled with fun and clever lines that prove Cena has what it takes as a rapper. There are other tracks on the album that have catchy hooks or deep messages, so it’s fine that “Bad, Bad Man” is just a fun diss track.

The music video is a parody and tribute to 1980s nostalgia. Cena, Trademarc, and Bumpy Knuckles are dressed like members of The A-Team. Cena is Hannibal, Knuckles is B.A. Baracus, and Tha Trademarc is dressed like the team’s pilot Murdock, including wearing the character’s black Chuck Taylors. In the video, icons from the 80s are being kidnapped, and Gary Coleman is worried he is next. He calls on “The Chain Gang” to stop these kidnappers and save the 80s. What follows is a multi-minute montage of fights, shootouts, and explosions in a homage to not only The A-Team, but 80s action movies in general. The video ends with the reveal that Gary Coleman is actually behind the kidnappings. He blows up the warehouse they’re all in, but “The Chain Gang” survives to fight another day. It’s a campy video, and it’s very fun, from what was a surprisingly good album.
