The Middle Aged Dad Jam Band (sometimes also called MadJam or MADJB) is an American garage band led by members of the comedy troupe The State. The group includes vocalist Ken Marino, drummer David Wain, guitarist Frank Barrera, bassist Sweet Teddy P, keyboardist Jon Spurney, trumpeter Jordan Katz, and Wain’s son Henry on saxophone. The band started during the COVID-19 Pandemic, and slowly built a following on YouTube. The group has been joined by special guests “Weird Al” Yankovic, Will Forte, Kristen Bell, Jess McKenna, and Kathryn Hahn over the years, and the band has now reached the level of popularity needed to headline festivals and shows like ComicRelief. Their latest video is a cover of “Time of My Life” with special guest Zoey Deutch. Deutch is the daughter of director Howard Deutch and actress Lea Thompson, and has been a staple of the rom-com genre over the last decade, starring in films like Set It Up, Something from Tiffany’s, and Voicemails for Isabelle.

“Time of My Life" is a song composed by Franke Previte, John DeNicola, and Donald Markowitz. It was originally recorded by singers Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes and famously used as the theme song for the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, acting as the song that plays during the climactic dance at the end of the film. The song became an absolute classic, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song and has since seen countless tributes, homages, and parodies over the years.

We haven’t seen Deutch get to show off her singing abilities, but here we get to see that she has an absolutely lovely voice. The video begins with Zoey being brought into the garage by lead vocalist Ken Marino and drummer David Wain. Zoey looks like the epitome of summertime, wearing a tied-off crop top, jean shorts, and optical white high top chucks. They talk about the film they worked on together, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, and Zoey mentions that she had the “time of her life” working on the film. After Ken and David don’t really reciprocate, she turns to leave. This leads to Ken initiating the song and bringing her back onto the garage floor stage. They perform the song through the first chorus when a pair of professional dancers appear to reenact the choreography from Dirty Dancing. This all builds up to the iconic lift and spin, and the performance ends with another plug for Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass. This video is fun and captures the usual Middle Aged Dad Jam Band vibe of relaxed performances of classic tunes.
