Zendaya is one of the most famous people on the planet. She is everywhere these days, with movies and TV shows dropping and over 200 million followers on social media. She’s a fashion icon and a two-time Emmy Award winner for Lead Actress in a Drama and has appeared in some of the biggest films of the past decade. Just this year, she starred in back-to-back billion dollar successes, The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, both with her husband Tom Holland. She’s done all this and so much more, and she’s had black high top chucks on her feet for the majority of it. That’s right, Zendaya might be the most famous celebrity associated with chucks. She’s worn them pretty much everywhere, from growing up in Oakland, California, to becoming the biggest actress of her generation. This includes, her career beginnings as a teen pop star.

Zendaya began her career as a child fashion model, but soon got her big break as the co-lead on the sitcom Shake It Up on the Disney Channel in 2010. As is tradition with Disney Channel stars, this in turn led to a music career under Disney’s Hollywood Records. Her self-titled debut album dropped in 2013, and its lead single was “Replay”, a pop song with dubstep elements. This song was a major break from the usual Disney Channel star faire, as the intense production elements are very different from the typical ballads and bublegum pop many acts were handed. This is all due to Zendaya herself who has always exercised her own autonomy when making decisions about her career and art.

The music video is heavily inspired by Janet Jackson’s “The Pleasure Principle” video, and references it in several scenes. This video has Zendaya wearing a few outfits, the most notable being an all-white early-2010s coded number complete with monochrome-white chucks. The visuals here focus solely on Zendaya’s dance moves, and the incredibly crisp choreography. The other noticeable thing here is that even thirteen years ago, it is very clear that Zendaya had “it”. She has a presence and charisma that draws you in. It’s pure star-quality and over a decade and $9.8 billion in box office sales later, it’s clear that it was true.
